In Oct. 1796, land on the west side of Otter Creek was transferred from Cornwall, Vt., to Middlebury. The parcels covered by these deeds were all part of that land. Most or all of the property conveyed in the deeds from 1796 and 1797 later became part of the Middlebury College campus. In 1801 the Middlebury Falls School District was organized. It served the area near the falls until 1815 when it joined with all districts west of Otter Creek to form the Western Village School District. The Western Village District school became District No. 4 in 1822. The school year was divided, by the state, into four terms and each term was administered separately.
